Policy Statements - XENOTRANSPLANTATION

Passed by the NKF September 1997 (Amended 2008)

The National Kidney Federation supports the concept of xenotransplantation in principle.

The Federation believes that the reality of xenotransplantation is some years away and all efforts must be maintained to promote human organ donation and explore alternatives such as Stem Cell Research artificial organs.

Xenotransplantation seeks to transplant organs from animals into humans – but has met with very limited success and carries fears of cross species infection. The NKF would only support Xenotransplantation if the risks were eliminated.
