Guidelines for Haemodialysis Patients Travelling

1. Finding a Dialysis Unit
Choosing a holiday destination depends partly on access to a suitable haemodialysis unit. Many destinations and some cruises offer HD facilities. Flexibility helps ensure you can reach a safe and appropriate unit.

2. Keep Your Home Renal Unit Informed
Update your renal team about any holiday dialysis planning. They may need to provide infectionncontrol details, clinical requirements, and will assess your fitness to travel.

3. Questions to Ask a Dialysis Unit Before Booking
When contacting an overseas unit, ask whether they accept visiting patients, whether your dates are available, the costs, whether they accept GHIC/EHIC, and whether they treat patients with bloodnborne viruses. Inform your renal team if any answers involve special considerations.

Special Note – Spain

Spain requires a P10 form before travel. Your renal unit will arrange this.

4. Mobility or Travel Assistance
Airports, ports, and rail stations offer wheelchairs and assisted travel, which must be booked in advance.

5. Transport to and from the Dialysis Unit
Plan how you will reach the dialysis unit. Ask your hotel or the unit about transport options and allow extra time for traffic or fatigue.

6. Differences in Treatment
Expect some variation in equipment or procedures abroad. Discuss possible differences with your home renal team. If you normally use lignocaine, bring your own supply.

7. Costs and Insurance
Understand all costs before you travel. GHIC/EHIC may reduce but not eliminate charges. Ensure your travel insurance covers pre-existing renal conditions.

8. Swimming, Sport and Activities
Check with your renal team before swimming or starting new activities, especially regarding fistulas, grafts or catheters.

9. Courtesy and Good Practice A small thank-you gift or card at the end of your stay is appreciated and leaves a positive impression of UK patients.
