Policy Statements - END OF LIFE CARE

Passed by the NKF 12th July 2008

The National Kidney Federation supports the provision of end of life care, either by the NHS, private provision, or by both, as described in the National Service Framework (Part 2) published February 2005. Prior to 2005 this care had been available to other therapy areas (such as Cancer) for many years, however there was little provision of end of life care within renal.

The Federation is keen to ensure that all ERF patients understand that terms such as “Palliative Care” or “Conservative Management” refer to the management of the patients stable or declining condition and should not be regarded as treatment for Kidney failure. The NKF prefers unambiguous terminology such as “End of Life Care”.
