The National Kidney Federation call for urgency from Government to make kidney disease a priority.

You can help us to seek action, invite your local MP to attend the Parliamentary Reception event on Wednesday 8th March 2023, 13:00 – 16:00 at the Terrace Pavilion, Westminster.

Did you know that…

  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects an estimated 3.5 million people across the UK and costs the NHS over £1.45 billion annually.
  • Patients with CKD have higher hospital care costs than patients with heart failure, strokes, heart attacks, and peripheral artery disease combined.
  • Despite the burden of illness on individuals and the NHS, awareness of CKD is low, with almost 1 in 2 people with CKD being undiagnosed.

As CKD is asymptomatic until its later stages,v a more proactive approach towards diagnosis is required.

The National Kidney Federation want to educate and improve lives by highlighting opportunities to MPs and for the NHS to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of kidney disease.

The National Kidney Federation in collaboration with AstraZeneca*, Fresenius Medical Care and Healthy.io have arranged a reception in Parliament a day before World Kidney Day takes place to emphasise the importance of early diagnosis with MPs. We will be offering urine testing to all eligible parliamentarians, with medical professionals on hand to explain the simple smartphone-based test and to discuss results. The event will also offer blood pressure tests to raise the awareness of maintaining good kidney health. In addition, to provide an insight into life for people with chronic kidney disease who need dialysis, there will be three different types of dialysis machines being demonstrated during the afternoon.

The event is Wednesday 8th March 2023 from 13:00 – 16:00 at the Terrace Pavilion, Westminster.

The NKF will send your local MP a formal invitation to the event, but it would be greatly appreciated if you could also send an invite by using our Invite Your MP downloadable template here.

Invite your MP
By inviting your MP, we hope to spread further awareness. The Parliamentary Reception is a drop-in session which is being sponsored by Laura Farris MP, who is the chair of the APPG for kidney. If you want to invite your MP, why not tell them a bit about yourself and how kidney disease as affected you as an individual whether that be because you are a patient, family member, loved one, carer or friend.
