Policy Statements - HAEMODIALYSIS TREATMENT FREQUENCY

Passed by the NKF September 1997 (Amended 2008 & Reviewed 2019)

Each patient should be offered a dialysis regime to maximize their well-being.

The National Kidney Federation recommends 3 x 4 hours as a minimum for the majority of Haemodialysis patients, however it recognises that for optimal dialysis benefit the dialysis will be designed on an individual basis and may entail daily dialysis or more frequent dialysis of shorter duration.

Note

Slippage to twice weekly sessions to accommodate more patients in congested facilities is to be deplored. In exceptional circumstances where twice weekly dialysis is imposed by geographical constraints, there is a heightened need for monitoring of the patient’s nutritional status and dialysis adequacy.
