Kidney Patient Association (KPA) pages - South East Scotland Kidney Patients Association

The South East Scotland Kidney Patients Association was formed in 1979 by renal patients and has the object of promoting support to renal patients and their families and to help to improve their quality of life by:-

  1. assisting in the provision of facilities not otherwise available from the National Health Service or any other statutory body in the areas covered by the Association;
  2. forming a liaison between the Association and the hospital staff concerned with Association members and liaising with any other organisation which will benefit the members and further the objectives of the Association;
  3. supporting initiatives promoting organ donation.

SESKPA represents patients and their carers from the area served by Lothian Health Board, Fife Health Board and Borders Trust. At present we have approximately 275 members (patients, carers, families and health professionals).

As a Registered Charity (SC004923) we rely to a great extent on the generosity of the general public, although we carry out a wide range of fund-raising activities. The Association believes that caring for the spirit is just as important as trying to keep well. SESKPA work is overseen by a Committee of volunteers.

From September to June the Association holds meetings on the first Sunday of each month, 11am-1pm, at The Edinburgh Thistle Hotel, Leith Street, Edinburgh - newcomers are always welcome. Some of the meetings are purely for information exchange, others have invited speakers. In 2004 we had a talk from a representative of the Department of Work and Pensions, who discussed Disability Living Allowance & associated allowances. The Association also issues a regular, informative newsletter.

We organise a subsidised annual holiday as part of our social remit, and over the years have had weekend trips to such places as Fort William, Newtonmore, Ayr, Carlisle and, in 2004, Amsterdam. In 2005, for the first time, a party of 49 had a very enjoyable week’s holiday in Mallorca. We also operate an eight-berth caravan at Berwick-upon-Tweed, which is very popular with our patient members and their families. In addition, the Association hosts social events where we party and let our hair down!
