Ronnie Cowan MP (SNP) and vice-chair of All-party Parliamentary Kidney Group has welcomed the Scottish Government announcement that it will introduce legislation for a ‘soft’ opt-out system of organ and tissue donation.
The announcement, during the delivery of the Programme for Government, by the First Minister also coincides with Organ Donation Week - 4th and 10 September.
The Scottish Government will further increase the number of cases where organ and tissue donation is authorised, the Bill will introduce a ‘soft’ opt-out system of organ and tissue donation, enabling donations to proceed where a person had not opted-out. It will also include safeguards to minimise the risk of a person becoming a donor if they would not have wished to donate.
Mr Cowan said;
“I welcome the announcement from the Scottish Government that it will introduce legislation for a ‘soft’ opt-out system of organ and tissue donation.
“As I’ve said before, more people are requiring a transplant which means we require more people to add their name to the organ donation register.
“I look forward to hearing more details about the legislation and how it will help those requiring organ donation.”
