What we do
There are about 3 million people with Chronic Kidney Disease in the UK of whom 30,000 need to receive regular dialysis in order to live.
Having kidney disease, especially when dialysis or hospitalisation is involved, can dramatically reduce the quality of life for both patients and their families. The NKF is constantly campaigning for best practice across all hospitals and for the provision of more kidney transplants, of which currently there are only 3,000 a year. Sadly many people die each year before they can receive one. So one of the things we are currently campaigning for is that more people are able to benefit in this way.
We have a national helpline which receives 300 calls a month and hold a stock of over 150 leaflets on a huge number of subjects that kidney patients ask us about. We also lobby on their behalf for the best treatments to be made available to them.
Why you should become a "Friend for Life"
The National Kidney Federation is a charity, run by patients, for patients; it relies totally upon the generosity of those who support it. Without donations it cannot succeed, – with donations the lives of thousands of kidney patients and their carers can be improved. The patients and carers know this, that is why so many of them are “Friends for Life” themselves. So whether you are a patient, a carer or just a “Friend” who wants to help, please join by paying a subscription. Your support will help us to expand the services we offer.
What you will receive as a “Friend for Life”
- The satisfaction of knowing that you have really helped,
- Quarterly issues of Kidney Life, our magazine (this is sent to all our renal contacts)
- Full access to all the Medical Information pages on this web site and the NKF Helpline.
