Gordon Nicholas, Chairman of the NKF, issued the following statement at 9.30am, Wednesday 14th January 2004:-

“The National Kidney Federation welcomes the publication of Part One of the Renal National Service Framework (NSF). The document contains standards and markers for the provision of renal therapy over the next ten years. These standards are well considered, and desperately needed by the growing numbers of kidney patients throughout the United Kingdom.

We are disappointed that the NSF lacks ‘enforcement of the implementation’ of these standards, and we note that the document also lacks targets and costings that would have enabled the NKF to hold both the Government and service providers to account. However, this document is a fresh start, and we will now brief our patients on the standards and markers in order that we can monitor the implementation of these life saving NHS services for our self, and work with the PCTs, CEs, NHS Trusts and Strategic Health Authorities to bring about these improvements in as shorter time span as possible.

The document identifies a 5% growth in the number of kidney patients each and every year - patients must now insist that the provision of these improved renal services keeps pace with that growth.”
