The NHS has just launched two initiatives to consult patients and carers concerning the future of kidney treatment in the UK.
The first is a national workshop to be held in London on 24th November 2011 as part of a project “to consider ways in which the care provided to kidney patients can be managed across the patient pathway ensuring patients receive their treatment in the most appropriate care setting. It will also seek ways in which GPs and primary care teams through the Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) can work closely with the commissioners in the NHS Commissioning Board.” 40 places are available for patients and carers who would be interested in helping to shape future treatment commissioning and delivery.
A letter has been sent to the NKF by Beverley Matthews, Director – NHS Kidney Care, giving further information. Click here to read the letter. There is also a website where patients and carers can register their interest.
The second initiative is a consultation by the Department of Health on draft Quality and Safety of Organs for Transplantation Regulations that transpose Directive 2010/53/EU on the standards of quality and safety of human organs intended for transplantation (the ‘Organ Directive’). This consultation will run from 26th October to 21st December 2011. Again, a letter has been received by the NKF giving details of the process, which may be read here. This letter also mentions a simultaneous consultation by the Human Tissue Authority on their Framework Document, as well as providing links to source materials and current drafts.
