Stop Press — It is intended that Organs for transplant are soon going to become available from donors who die in Accident and Emergency departments and not just from donors who die in Intensive Care Units. The extra organs are thought to be sufficient in number to end the transplant waiting lists within three years of this innovation coming into force. This new development was confirmed to the NKF at a recent meeting within the D of H and follows a campaign by the NKF to gain access to wasted organs. There remain some legal ethical, practical and resource hurdles to overcome before this programme can begin.
