Comments of the draft version (see below) are invited by 31 January 2005

For the last 2 years Dr Charlie Tomson (a consultant nephrologist in Bristol (UK) and currently on a one year sabbatical in the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in the USA), together with Gordon Nicholas a former Chairman of the NKF) plus others, have been working on the development of guidelines for the identification, management and referral of patients with Chronic Kidney Disease.

The main purpose of these guidelines is to ensure that people with early kidney disease are recognized as early as possible and given the best possible treatment, including referral to a kidney specialist when necessary (while avoiding unnecessary hospital referral for the many people with mild kidney disease whose care is better delivered in primary care). The guidelines are written for a medical audience and the long version of the document refers extensively to the evidence base for the recommendations the writers make. It is anticipated that the guidelines will be referred to in the forthcoming second part of the NSF for England, but hope that they will apply throughout the UK.

The guidelines, see below, are now ready for consultation prior to publication and visitors to this website (whether medical professionals, patients, carers or others) are invited to comment on these guidelines.

There are 3 documents:

Draft CKD Guidelines - Full document (655 Kb PDF Document, 106 pages)
Draft CKD Guidelines - Summary of draft recommendations (228 Kb PDF Document, 16 pages)
Draft CKD Guidelines - Desktop Guide (246 Kb PDF Document, 14 pages)

Please Email your comments to Dr Charlie Tompson (ctomson@ihi.org) copied to the NKF (nkf@kidney.org.uk) by Monday 31 January 2005.

Thank you.
