About Kent Kidney Patients Association
This group was started as the Canterbury Kidney Patients Association in 1986. The name was changed to Kent KPA in April 2000, and we represent people requiring renal replacement therapy who are patients of the Kent & Canterbury Hospital.
The Committee of 10 are volunteers, most of whom are transplant patients along with our one co-opted staff member and we work in with the close co-operation and kind assistance of the Renal Director and Staff at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital.
Our AIM is to help patients come to terms with kidney failure, and help families to cope with the stresses of long term dialysis treatment. We also provide encouragement and information through our newsletter.
We Pay for copies of the NKF Magazine, “Kidney Life” to be sent direct to our members. There are some fund raising events to increase our income, and we send a Team to the National Transplant Games to draw attention to the need for more Kidney Donors and raise awareness to the existence of the National Organ Donor Register.
More direct assistance is sometimes given to our Kidney Patients in need through our liaison with the Care Manager of Social Services at the Hospital.
Also, at times, we purchase items of small equipment such as ‘fluid heaters’ etc for our patients to use at home. Sometimes we supply items for the Wards for patients’ comfort which, like televisions, are not provided by the NHS.
Another Benefit we provide for our Members is a free week’s holiday at one of our two Caravans situated at Combe Haven Holiday Park, St Leonards-on-Sea.
Membership is FREE.
