My visit to the Sharm El Sheikh dialysis clinic (on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt) was to assess the facilities on offer to Kidney patients, in a part of the world that patients on the whole would not consider while on dialysis. As well as looking at dialysis facilities, I looked at what the different holiday resorts have to offer. This resort on the red sea will not just suit dialysis patient but any patient from pre-dialysis to transplant patients. My visit was made possible by Fresenius Medical Care and Holiday Dialysis International.
Flights from the United Kingdom to Sharm El Sheikh depart from Manchester, Gatwick. and Heathrow airports and take about 4 hours to get there. I landed at the airport, which is only 3 miles from any of the resorts, and passage through customs was friendly and quick as long as you had your entry visa.
The journey to the resort was quick, and on arriving I was allocated my accommodation. My cases were transported to my rooms by very friendly and helpful staff. The facilities on offer for those with disabilities to get around were excellent with personnel-driven buggies and a fifteen minute minibus service. The resort had everything to offer from those that wanted activity to those that just wanted to lounge; the food and entertainment were five star and all told something for everyone.
The dialysis centre, operated by the Egyptian Medical Services, is situated just fifteen minute from the resort. It has its own swimming pool for any of the family that may wish to use it while waiting and is set in a beautiful area overlooking the Red Sea.
The dialysis centre has six stations and patients can arrange dialysis times to suit them. Medical staff are fully trained in renal services and stay on site while patients are dialysing. Medical back-up services are on call twenty four hours a day, and intensive care arrangements are available as part of the service at the local well-equipped hospital.
Food is prepared to the patient’s diet, and treatment is given by the latest technology machines, with all records kept and sent back to your consultant. Transport to and from the unit is by private car from outside your accommodation. As far as somewhere to go, Sharm offers everything that any patient could want.
In conclusion I wish to thank the medical staff, Mr R Kelada, EMS clinic administrator, and Mr Amr Saafan, Manager, for making my stay pleasant and informative.. For more information on the clinic e-mail: rkelada@ems-eg.com and the southern Sinai resorts at Sharm El Sheikh, consult any travel agent. EMS also has clinics at Cairo and Alexandria.
