This page contains details of haemodialysis units that accept patients for treatment while they are on holiday. In addition, many Kidney Patients Associations (KPAs) have holiday dialysis arrangements for their own members - caravans, holiday homes, group holidays. Please ask your own KPA.

Some renal units in the UK and abroad are willing to accept patients for a holiday break, please ask your own consultant for referral.

BANGOR

BLACKPOOL - CLIFTON DIALYSIS UNIT

Unit is purpose-built with 20 stations accomodating holidaymakers in addition to our regular patient population. Unit open 7am to 18.30 and holiday patients’ shifts would be dependant on availability and demand according to regular patient needs.

It is a 10-15 min car journey from Blackpool town centre (approx £12 in a taxi) and is on a main and frequent bus route with just a short walk from bus stop to unit.

BOURNEMOUTH

The KC Holiday Dialysis Centre at Southbourne, Bournemouth is a friendly, family run unit situated about 100 yards from the beautiful sandy beach. Bournemouth town and its famous pier are approximately two miles away:

• Parking available and has wheelchair access,
• Dialysis facilities offered all year round,
• Normal opening hours 8am – 8pm,
• Arrangements made with local hotels situated within a few minutes walk of the unit, to offer a discount on accommodation,
• First-line medical support available,
• All patients must be Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C negative,

CHARING CROSS HOLIDAY DIALYSIS TRUST

Charing Cross Holiday Dialysis Trust has recently refurbished its holiday centre, St.Anne’s in Emsworth. With a resident house manager and renal trained dialysis nurse, they are able to offer first class self catering holiday accommodation for renal patients. Full disabled facilities are available. Dialysis is undertaken in a new purpose-built dialysis unit situated in the garden.

St.Anne’s, with its beautiful gardens, is just a short walk from the centre of Emsworth, a picturesque village in the upper reaches of Chichester Harbour full of charm and character with its numerous tea shops and pubs.

COCKERMOUTH (LAKE DISTRICT)

Whilst holidaying in the English Lake District or South West Scotland you are now able to dialyse at the Lakeland Holiday Dialysis Unit, situated beside the main A66 trunk road, close to the picturesque market town of Cockermouth, on the fringe of the Lake District National Park.

The Unit is always staffed by a fully qualified experienced nephrology nurse and is open all year round (including Saturdays).

You will be dialysed in a dedicated dialysis room in the comfortable surroundings of the home of Margaret Clark who is a very experienced Senior Dialysis Staff Nurse. You will have access to Cable TV, radio and internet access from your own laptop if required.

EDINBURGH

Opened in April 2003, Scottish Holiday Dialysis is situated in central Edinburgh. Staffed by experienced dialysis nurses, open 7 days a week and you can choose your time whenever possible. The unit is easily accessible with metered parking nearby and a frequent bus service to the door.

EXETER

The Exeter Kidney Unit has dialysis units located in Exeter and South Molton which is on the southern edge of Exmoor, close to Barnstaple.

FRESENIUS DIALYSIS CLINICS (around the UK)

The following dailysis clinics, funded by the NHS and run by Fresenius,are available for Holiday Dialysis:

Contact details (for all Centres): Please contact your own Renal Unit who, provided they approve you (ie the patient) to travel, can phone the Holiday Co-ordinator at Fresenius Medical Care on (01623) 445137 to check availability.

For your information, Fresenius Medical Care cannot accept bookings directly from patients as they need to ensure that the patient’s Renal Unit has approved the patient to travel.

GLASGOW

The Golden Jubilee National Hospital at Clydebank in Glasgow is set in extensive landscaped grounds on the banks of the river Clyde. There are trained dialysis nurses and medical staff and the facilities include TV, radio, internet connection, daily newspapers and refreshments.

Patients should be established on dialysis and must have permanent dual access lines. All patients must be HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C negative.

There is a 4-star Best Western hotel attached to the hospital offering special rates for dialysis patients and relatives/friends. To take advantage of these rates, travel can be arranged through the hospital Dialysis Administrator.

LONDON (STEPNEY GREEN)

A new, modern, renal dialysis service has been introduced at The London Independent Hospital in Stepney Green, ideal for use by locals, holiday-makers and business people. PLYMOUTH

A 29 bed unit within Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, set on the Devon/Cornwall border, can accommodate up to 6 holiday patients on our twilight sessions which run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Our machines are modern Gambro AK200 and Ultra and we use High Flux dialysers.

Plymouth has seen a lot of regeneration over the past years and now boasts a brand new shopping mall, along with all the history that goes with Sir Francis Drake, the Hoe and its beautiful scenery, and the Barbican with its fishing boats and quaint pubs. We are only 20 minutes from Dartmoor National Park, and 45 minutes away from glorious sandy beaches. We are also very well blessed with National Trust properties, if you fancy some culture!
