Workshop - Diabetes and Renal Disease

The workshop was led by Donna Kemp, transplant nurse specialist at Queen Victoria Hospital, Portsmouth. She has worked within the field of renal nursing for 15 years, including working as a diabetes nurse specialist. Donna has been part of a consensus group reviewing UK guidelines for new onset after transplantation (NODAT), due to be published in the near future.

Much of the workshop was concerned with NODAT. Some of the anti-rejection drugs can cause diabetes as a side effect. The steroid prednisolone, cyclosporin and tacrolimus can all cause diabetes. The workshop attendees were advised to keep their weight under control and to keep to a careful diet. Sometimes insulin is needed, either by tablets or injection, and annual eye tests were recommended.

Donna went on to discuss the cardiovascular risk factors for transplant patients, and how things like hypertension, stress and genetic factors can be limited. The workshop finished with a general discussion, led by Bill Pownall, a 56 year-old transplant patient, on feelings when diagnosed with diabetes and lifestyle changes that diabetes brings.
