Meeting - Chairmen's Half-Yearly Report to the Council
The influence
of the National Kidney Federation continues to grow, co-chairmen
Michael Hill and Gary Lloyd reported to the Council.
The NKF has two representatives on the European
Kidney Patients Federation (CEAPIR) General Council and chief
executive Tim Statham has been elected as an officer. The
NKF has presented evidence to many outside bodies, including
the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and
the Health Select Committee of the House of Commons. A dialogue
with health ministers and the Department of Health continues
on an almost weekly basis and by acting as secretariat to
the All Party Parliamentary Kidney Group within Parliament,
the NKF ensures that its agenda remains tightly on the needs
of renal patients. Working partnerships have been established
between the NKF Helpline, the NKF website, NHS Direct and
NHS Direct online. The NKF now employs seven full-time and
three part-time staff.

Following part one of the National Service Framework, the NKF working
with the Kidney Alliance has begun a programme of training for Primary
Care Trust commissioners and for the “informed patient.”
A national umbrella organisation as a sub committee of the NKF is planned
to bring forward renal issues particularly pertaining to ethnic groups.
It is hoped there will be more news of this later. The NKF continues to
enjoy the magnificent support of its industry partners.
The NKF website is due to launch a Young Persons’ Group zone specifically
targeted at younger patients. The NKF website itself is now greater than
500 pages and has been viewed by more than 200,000 people. Dr Alan Watson
of Nottingham is reproducing a series of medical information on the website
to assist young renal patients and their carers and has agreed to become
a medical advisor.
Mindful that renal issues must have a high profile, the NKF assists newspapers
on a daily basis and helps television soaps to get their story lines accurate.
Chief executive Tim Statham also took part in a Soap Life studio chat
on live donation.
