NKF scoops first place in British Renal Society (BRS) scholarship

In June 2004, Kidney Life carried an Anaemia Survey. The replies (2106) helped to form the basis of an NKF 50 page submission to the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) who are currently conducting an appraisal of UK Anaemia treatment. Realising the importance of the work, and the need to make the patients views on this matter reach the widest possible audience, Tim Statham the NKF Chief Executive, assisted by Dr Philip McEwen (School of Mathematics, Cardiff University) and Dr Mel Walker (Roche Products Ltd) decided to submit the work to the British Renal Society Annual Conference 2005 as an Abstract. After initial consideration, the BRS decided that the work should be submitted in the form of an “Abstract Poster”. It is believed that this is the first time that a patient group has submitted research work to the BRS, and the resulting poster took its place alongside 48 other works from NHS groups, Hospitals, Trusts and Universities.

After a tense one and a half hour period when the posters were judged, and a wait of 36 hours whilst attendees to the BRS viewed the poster exhibition the result of the scholarship was announced at the BRS Gala Dinner. Not only had the poster represented the first occasion when a patient group had submitted work to the competition, but it had won first place!
