Journey Times to Haemodialysis CampaignThe NKF believes that no Dialysis patient should have to travel for more than thirty minutes in order to receive their life saving treatment. In March 2007 (ahead of World Kidney Day) the National Kidney Federation wrote to all 650 Members of Parliament informing them how long it would take a patient to travel from the MP’s Constituency Office to the nearest three Dialysis Centres - the intention was to highlight the enormous variations in Dialysis provision. The NKF had found when undertaking this research that journey times varied from less than a minute to more than 4 hours by car or 8 hrs by public transport in some Constituencies. Many MPs when receiving this information then wrote to the Minister responsible asking what steps were being taken to increase Dialysis services. A reply to Sir Peter Tapsell MP can be read here (PDF - requires Acrobat Reader - 398kB). The NKF wishes to record its thanks to Roche (Pharmaceutical) for enabling this research work to be carried out. Please click here to see the journey times by Constituency in the UK. |
